is an independent medical specialty, which was a sub-specialty of radiology until recently, that uses minimally invasive image-guided procedures to diagnose and treat diseases in nearly every organ system. The concept behind interventional radiology is to diagnose and treat patients using the least invasive techniques currently available in order to minimize risk to the patient and improve health outcomes.
Using X-rays, CT, ultrasound, MRI, and other imaging modalities, interventional radiologists obtain images which are then used to direct interventional instruments throughout the body. These procedures are usually performed using needles and narrow tubes called catheters, rather than by making large incisions into the body as in traditional surgery.
Many conditions that once required surgery can now be treated non-surgically by interventional radiologists. By minimizing the physical trauma to the patient, peripheral interventions can reduce infection rates and recovery time, as well as shorten hospital stays.
Our interventional radiology physicians are highly trained in performing these specialized procedures, which combine the latest in computer-aided imaging technology with sophisticated equipments. All Pawana Hospital interventional radiologists are board certified, well trained and leaders in the field.
Interventional Radiology Procedures
Pawana Hospital interventional radiologists perform many high-tech, and often life-saving, procedures that include:
Endovascular procedures like angioplasty and stent placement to open blocked or narrowed veins and arteries
GI/biliary interventions, including feeding tube placements
GU procedures, such as to clear kidney obstructions
Myelography to evaluate for spinal stenosis
Vascular access for long-term IV therapy
Embolization to stop hemorrhaging or excessive bleeding
Vertebroplasty to treat compression spine fractures
Oncological services including biopsy of tumors
Carotid stenting Using DSA

JOINT REPLACEMENT & SPINE SURGERY
What is a knee replacement surgery?
Knee replacement, also called arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure to resurface a knee damaged by arthritis. Metal and plastic parts are used to cap the ends of the bones that form the knee joint, along with the kneecap. This surgery may be considered for someone who has severe arthritis or a severe knee injury.
Various types of arthritis may affect the knee joint. Osteoarthritis, a degenerative joint disease that affects mostly middle-aged and older adults, may cause the breakdown of joint cartilage and adjacent bone in the knees. Rheumatoid arthritis, which causes inflammation of the synovial membrane and results in excessive synovial fluid, can lead to pain and stiffness.
Traumatic arthritis, arthritis due to injury, may cause damage to the cartilage of the knee.
The goal of knee replacement surgery is to resurface the parts of the knee joint that have been damaged and to relieve knee pain that cannot be controlled by other treatments
Pawana Hospital conducts the following procedures on a regular basis:
Knee Replacement Surgery (Total as well as Partial)
Fixed and Rotating Platform
Conventional and Minimally Invasive Surgery
Ligament Preserving Knee Replacement
Hip Replacement Surgery
Partial and Total Hip Replacement

MAXILLO FACIAL AND ORAL SURGERY
Department is fully equipped with modern dental surgery equipment. There is senior maxillofacial surgeon who are present to handle routine work & emergencies in maxillo facial surgery.
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is the surgical specialty of dentistry that includes the diagnosis, surgical and related treatments of a wide spectrum of diseases, injuries, defects and aesthetic aspects of the mouth, teeth, jaws, face, head and neck.
Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are bridging element between dental and medical specialties and have the expertise and thorough understanding of both aesthetics and function to treat and care for patients who have such conditions as follows.
Orthognathic surgery (Jaw and facial deformities).
Facial trauma surgery (facial bone fractures and related soft tissue injuries).
Reconstructive surgery of the face.
Cleft lip and palate surgery and other facial deformities.
Facial plastic surgery (Rhinoplasty, facial implants, etc).
Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJD). (Excessive and reduced opening of jaws)
Snoring and sleep apnea correction surgery.
Tumor/Cancer surgery of mouth and face.
Loss of bone in the upper and/or lower jaws can result from injury or trauma, tumor surgery or long-term denture wear. Using bone grafts from either the patient's own bone or bone substitutes, the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon can improve both the quantity and quality of the hard tissue. Soft tissue grafts can be utilized to improve the architecture of the soft tissues.
We are driving 21st century vehicles on l5th century roads with l6th century driving sense thus we have great increase in road traffic accidents. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons treat and repair injuries to the face, jaws, mouth and teeth.
Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are experts in treating trauma, including fractures of the upper and lower jaws and orbits, and the cosmetic management of facial lacerations. Their knowledge of how jaws come together (occlusion) allows them to repair complex facial fractures. Trauma can be result of major events like fight, sports injury or automobile accidents. Younger children often sustain damage to teeth or supporting structures from falls.
TMJ Disorders and Facial Pain
Common cause of facial pain and headache is disease or dysfunction of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Located where the lower jaw and skull meet, the TMJ is the ball and socket joint that enables the lower jaw (mandible) to move and function. TMJ disorders display a number of symptoms that may include earaches, headaches, and a limited range of movement. Patients may also complain of clicking or grating sounds in the joint, or pain when opening or closing their mouth.
A variety of problems and diseases cause TMJ disorders. In order to properly diagnose and treat the problem, oral and maxillofacial surgeons conduct a clinical examination and utilize a number of Diagnosis procedures, including imaging studies (radiograph, CT, MRI). Usually, non-surgical management (soft diet, anti-inflammatory drugs, physical and/or bite splint therapy) is the first step. For certain conditions, joint surgery may be an appropriate option.
Lysis and lavage of joint have proven effective in resolving these conditions. More complex joint surgery may be indicated for advanced conditions.
Oral Pathology/ Diseases/ Cancers
The diagnosis of pathology in the maxillofacial region is an important part of the oral and maxillofacial surgery practice. If indicated, biopsies and other tests can be performed to diagnose the problem and develop an appropriate treatment plan. Early detection and treatment of oral lesions greatly improve the patient's prognosis. Lesions may be managed medically and/or surgically. Research shows a number of factors that may contribute to the development of oral cancer. The most common are the use of tobacco and alcohol. Others include poor oral hygiene, irritation caused by ill-fitting dentures and rough surfaces on teeth, poor nutrition, some chronic infections and combinations of these factors. Everyone can perform an oral cancer self-exam each month. Oral and Maxillofacial surgeons are best positioned for treatment of oral cancers as they carry out removal of disease and replacement of removal part simultaneously to achieve good functional and aesthetic result.
Snoring/Obstructive Sleep Apnea
People who snore loudly are often the target of bad jokes and middle of the night elbow thrusts; but snoring is no laughing matter. Obstructive breathing patterns during sleep occur in approximately 45% of the population and can range from snoring to periods of true apnea, where breathing ceases for a brief period of time. Obstructive sleep apnea can lead to excessive daytime sleepiness, poor work performance and such cardiovascular disorders as hypertension, arrhythmias and congestive heart failure. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are trained to diagnose and treat this condition.
Facial Cosmetic Surgery
Their surgical and dental background and their ability to reconstruct facial structures damaged through trauma have made oral and maxillofacial surgeons attuned to the importance of harmony between facial appearance and function. Before any cosmetic procedure is performed, the oral and maxillofacial surgeon will request a thorough medical history to evaluate the patient's overall general health.

PLASTIC & VASCULAR SURGERY:
In the competitive fast paced world that we live in, how we look is extremely important. First impressions make a big difference in making and breaking relations, job prospects and careers. Looking good and attractive, young and youthful brimming with vitality is a desire and dream of many. How you look in the mirror can instill confidence in yourself and improve your self-esteem. Western world has progressed from cosmetics to creams and potions to surgery to improve their looks. It has become one of the most popular specialties in USA and Europe.
In Pawana Hospital we take care of this aesthetic element, congenital facial anomalies, Muscles & scar defects, Industrial & Accident vascular trauma by operating patients at the expert surgical hand of our plastic & vascular surgery.
Scope of Aesthetic Surgery
Aesthetic Plastic Surgery can be broadly classified into two categories – surgery to make you look younger, more youthful, fresh and to reshape your body to improve your proportions.
Liposuction is the commonest procedure to reshape the body in the West. Other procedures such as Rhinoplasty (Reshaping the nose), Chin and Cheek augmentation, Breast enhancement or reduction, Abdominoplasty, Calf and Gluteal augmentation are few of the other popular reshaping operations. Sometimes, after massive weight loss, skin of the arms, thighs and abdomen have to be tightened and this can be done surgically. Lips can be augmented by injection of Hyluronic acid and depressions can be corrected by Fat injections.
Rejuvenation procedures or operations to make you look younger include, Brow lift, Face-lift, Neck lift and Breast lift. Non-surgical options to get rid of wrinkles and creases on the face include injections of Botox, Restylane and similar hyluronic acid analogues. The finer wrinkles and sun damaged lustreless skin can be improved with Facial peels such as Glycolic acid, and TCA
Liposuction is a procedure in which a suction device is used with a cannula to suck fat cells from under the skin. The fat cells that are sucked and destroyed in this process are lost permanently. This is a quick, easy and definite way to get rid of fat that refuses to disappear even after vigorous exercise and dieting. It works best for localized fat deposits around the lower abdomen, hips, flanks and thighs. Newer techniques such as Power Assisted Liposuction with Super wet infiltration allow sculpturing of the body surface, hence called liposculpture. It can be done under general or local anesthesia. Minor liposuctions can be discharged on the same day, but it is preferable for major liposuctions to stay in the hospital for a day or two. After the operation, it is usual to find swelling and bruising. This subsides by 3 - 6 weeks. This is a reasonably safe procedure in the hands of well-trained Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons. There are risks associated with general anesthesia. Thrombosis of leg veins is a risk associated with age and lying in one position for a long time. Adequate precautions are taken to prevent this. Other risks include contour irregularities, which can be corrected by further liposuction or fat injection.
This is an operation in which the excess fat and skin folds of the abdomen are removed surgically. It is advised when the skin is in excess along with the fat, and is unlikely to contract after liposuction.
Many women develop a skin fold in the lower abdominal region and weakness of the abdominal muscles, especially after a caesarian section. This causes protrusion of the abdomen below the umbilicus. It can affect the posture and cause low backache as well. This operation can get rid of the skin fold. This whole operation is done through a caesarian type low transverse scar, which heals very well and fades over time.
In a full abdominoplasty, the umbilicus has to be re-sited, in a mini-abdominoplasty- the umbilicus is left in the same place and only the lower abdominal skin is removed. A newer technique that we follow combines liposuction with abdominoplasty, thus providing the benefits of both operations.
Risks and complications are the same as for liposuction. There might be delayed healing of the wound. Drains may have to be placed in this operation to remove accumulated fluid. They are usually removed in 2 – 5 days. Sometimes, after the drains are removed, fluid may re-accumulate and may need aspiration in the clinic.
The results are instantaneous and go on improving for the next 6 – 8 months as the scar softens and fades and the swelling and hardness from the surgery goes.
Peripheral Vascular Disease (PVD)
This department caters to patients with arterial and venous pathologies of body other than heart and brain, also called as peripheral vascular diseases. These involve common conditions like arterial blockages resulting in gangrene of limbs / toes, strokes, Deep venous thrombosis, renal vascular hypertensions, aneurysms etc.
Diagnosis of PVD is helped by peripheral and hand held bed side doppler machine, state of the art cath labs which also are used for Angiography + DSA and interventional vascular procedure like angioplasty, stents and stent graft insertion, thrombolysis, suction thrombectomy and embolisation.
Majority of the patients with PVD need surgical correction. Surgeries like peripheral bypass, embolectomies, carotid endarteriotomies for prevention of strokes etc. are routinely performed. The department has performed 550 surgeries in last three years with comparable results worldwide. Post operative course of these patients are monitored in cardiac recovery which is equipped with monitors, ventilators and well trained sisters and anesthetists.
